The Welfare Scan at LUC

The Welfare Scan, also known as a Well Being Scan or a Fetal Well-being Scan is a medical check generally carried out in the later stages of pregnancy. It is usually in the period from 14 weeks to full term. It is carried out at The London Ultrasound Centre. This examination entails taking measurements of the child’s, head, leg bone (femur) and waist. Our highly trained staff of consultants and sonographers consult special charts to see how they correlate with calculations they have already taken. The medical team will them be able to determine the rate of the child’s growth. The expectant mothers midwife or obstetrician will be alerted if the scan has discovered any cause of concern regarding your baby is growing in the womb.

If the rate of growth is deemed too slow, it could lead to more scans being arranged later in the term. There could be a call for more frequent scans to evaluate the baby’s progress in the womb, ensuring that the child is in health. There are many concerns and circumstances that could lead to an expectant mother to arrange for a Welfare Scan. The patient may suffer from pains in the tummy, had a fall or been in a road accident. The mother may have experienced inordinate spot bleeding or feel the baby isn’t moving as much as it should in the womb. In the course of a Welfare scan, the sonographer or consultant will accurately determine the diameter and circumference of an unborn child’s head, waist and femur. The scan will a examine the placenta and how much fluid is around your baby. It will evaluate the level of blood circulation in the baby and the umbilical artery. The Welfare Scan will also determine if the child is moving in the womb. A number of private patients may have a Welfare Scan every 4 weeks to measure the growth of their baby and a great many have come to depend on The London Ultrasound Centre.
